Getting Started with Genealogy:
A Quick-start Research Reference
Family Research
Get started recording your family history (your genealogy) by using a multi-
generation Ancestral Pedigree Chart, and a Family Group Details Record.
1. Prepare
Whether you are using paper to store information or software, reserve a blank
copy of these two documents. They will serve as your “masters.” You will be
making more copies from them as you do your research.
Detailed Instructions for the Ancestral Pedigree Chart and the Family Group
Details Record are located on our AAHGS National website. A PDF copy of
each form is also available for viewing on the same webpage. Below each PDF
is the downloadable, fillable version for your use in recording your family history.
Save them to your computer in a folder you’ve created for these records.
2. Begin
Follow the instructions on each document, and begin the journey of finding your
history. Good luck with your research!
